My Story
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to work in healthcare. However, it wasn’t until I was working on my undergraduate degree that I realized I wanted to become a doctor. In the same vein, I also have always enjoyed fitness, a balanced diet, and maintaining a healthy weight.
While I was in medical school, and then later in my residency, I didn’t struggle with gaining weight. As you can imagine, as a student and new doctor my schedule kept me on my toes and I had no problems with burning calories. I was also committed to making my food, maintaining my weight, and exercising regularly.
I began to slip up as my career progressed and electronic medical records were introduced to our office. Suddenly I was sitting more, eating more, and definitely getting less exercise. I often didn’t get enough sleep, much less make it to the gym regularly.
As my activity level and commitment to a balanced diet went down…my weight began creeping up. Just like anyone else, I was extremely stressed to discover this! I decided to seek help and consulted my doctor but only became even more discouraged. The doctor told me that due to my stressful career and erratic schedule, I would be highly unlikely to lose weight.
Despite this depressing counsel, I knew I would be able to lose the weight. I had coached so many patients to do that very thing and I knew I would accomplish my goal by following my own advice. I began to cut back on a lot of favorite, high-calorie food and started to increase my exercise. In a few months, I had lost the excess weight and met my goal. More importantly, I have been able to maintain a healthy weight ever since, despite my hectic, stressful career.”
